The Women’s Big Bash League features eight teams, Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers, Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Renegades, Adelaide Strikers, Hobart Hurricanes, Perth Scorchers, and Melbourne Stars. Every chapter, the championship hosts a group of brilliant Australian and international players.
In this year’s season, the audience will witness 8 Indian players on the ground for the first time. India’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur is on the field with Melbourne Renegades along with the talented batter Jemima Rodrigues. Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma are with the defending champions Sydney Thunder while Poonam Yadav plays for Brisbane Heat. Sydney Sixers secured Shafali Verma and Radha Yadav, and Hobart Hurricanes host Richa Ghosh. The tournament, which began on October 14 bagged title sponsorship from Weber Barbeques. Thus, the new name is Weber Women’s Big Bash League 2021.
Conducted in Australia and hosted by Cricket Australia, Big Bash Leagues is one of the most-watched domestic cricket tournaments in the world. This season, Big Bash women’s cricket was scheduled to have 59 games in which 8 Big Bash League teams compete. The tournament is expected to end on November 27, 2021. In the recent WBBL fixtures, Brisbane Heat embarked on a positive start by securing an eight-wicket victory over Sydney Sixers and reaching the target of 160 run with 9 balls to spare. This was followed by Adelaide Strikers having a clean sweep against the struggling Sydney Thunders by 18 runs. Brisbane Heat had already defeated Sydney Thunders by 5 wickets at the Adelaide Oval in the match last Sunday. The new season is indeed challenging for the yesteryear champions Sydney Thunder as they lost 6 out of 10 games leaving just 2 wins.
The 6 November match between Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat was a powerplay. Indian players Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues slammed half-centuries and contributed to the victory of Melbourne Renegades against Brisbane Heat by 15 runs. Kaur attained the Weber player of the match title by hitting a 32-ball 65 and one wicket in hand. Melbourne Renegades have climbed the top of the points table winning 7 matches out of 10 followed by Brisbane Heat. The upcoming fixtures might become demanding for Melbourne Renegades with four strong opponents in the line.
The most successful team to date, Sydney Sixers with 2 overall wins in the past leagues, is also facing a tight competition this year. The WBBL team overhauled Hobart Hurricanes by 31 runs in the recent match and has been exhibiting an average performance in this season. They secured 4 wins in the opening nine games. The impending fixtures will be crucial for the Sydney Sixers.
A twist in place
This season of WBBL Cricket t-20 comes with a twist as Cricket Australia announced a new playoffs format. In this year’s tournament, the knockout phase will have the four highest-ranked teams playing and the semi-finals will be replaced by Eliminator and Challenger games. The table-toppers will be directly qualified for the finals. A game of 3 vs 4 will take place and the winner of this game will take over the second team on the table. The team securing victory in this Challenger match will play in the Finals with backing from the home ground.
